Position Summary
Simply Benefits is seeking a Team Lead, Group Benefits Underwriting to provide day-to-day leadership and technical guidance to the underwriting team. This role is responsible for supporting consistent underwriting decisions, mentoring underwriters, and acting as a first point of escalation for complex cases across new business, renewals, and plan amendments. The ideal candidate brings strong hands-on group benefits underwriting experience, a collaborative leadership style, and the ability to operate effectively in a multi-carrier TPA environment.
Key Responsibilities
Provide daily guidance, coaching, and support to Group Benefits Underwriters.
Act as the first escalation point for complex or non-standard underwriting cases.
Review underwriting decisions for accuracy, consistency, and adherence to underwriting guidelines.
Support onboarding and training of new underwriting team members.
Foster a collaborative, accountable, and solutions-oriented team environment.
Underwriting Execution:
Perform underwriting for new business, renewals, and plan changes across insured and ASO arrangements, as required.
Support pricing analysis, experience reviews, trend assumptions, and credibility assessments.
Assist with underwriting exceptions and carrier negotiations.
Ensure accurate handling of plan amendments, carrier changes, and benefit transitions.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
Work closely with Sales, Client Management and Group Service Reps to support timely and accurate execution.
Provide underwriting input on complex client scenarios, escalations, and operational impacts.
Ensure underwriting decisions and assumptions are clearly documented and communicated to internal stakeholders.
Process, Quality & Continuous Improvement
Support consistent application of underwriting standards and best practices.
Identify process gaps, training needs, and opportunities for operational improvement.
Assist with system enhancements, testing, and underwriting workflow improvements.
Contribute to reporting, quality checks, and audit readiness activities.
Qualifications:Required:
5–8+ years of Group Benefits underwriting experience.
Strong technical knowledge across EHC, Dental, Disability, and ancillary benefits.
Experience underwriting experience-rated groups, renewals, and plan amendments.
Demonstrated ability to coach, mentor, or informally lead peers.
Strong communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
Preferred:
Previous experience in a Team Lead, Senior Underwriter, or similar role.
CEBS, or progress toward a professional designation.
Experience working in a TPA or multi-carrier environment.
Exposure to underwriting systems, automation, or process improvement initiatives.

Schedule:· Monday to Friday· 8 hour days
Location: Kelowna, BC (remote work available within Western Canada)
Salary Range: $80,000 to $105,000
